Gornja Siga
Why Gornja Siga remains central to Liberland’s history and claim, despite the long-running blockade around settlement.
For more than a decade, Liberlanders have looked for ways to settle in a place on the Danube that is claimed by neither Croatia nor Serbia and lies within their border dispute area. This place was formerly known as Gornja Siga, and later also came to be called Liberland City or simply Liberland.
In practice, long-term settlement there has been blocked by the local Croatian border police, who have repeatedly prevented Liberlanders from staying in the area. From Liberland's perspective, this has meant pressure and force being used against peaceful people on grounds tied to their identity and presence, despite the fact that Gornja Siga is not understood as falling under Croatian jurisdiction.
Liberland continues to maintain its claim to Gornja Siga and sees real potential for positive economic impact in the surrounding region if settlement were allowed to proceed. At the same time, pushing through the present blockade is costly, so Liberlanders remain open to alternative territorial options as well.
