A year ago, Liberland took a bold step into the future by launching a unique non-fungible token (NFT) featuring the Liberland flag as part of an international collection of symbolic digital artefacts sent to the Moon.
The mission was organized by Copernic Space, a project that collaborates with commercial lunar landers to place digital and physical time capsules on the lunar surface. As part of this effort, a curated collection of NFTs—representing nations, communities, and cultural achievements—was carried aboard a lunar lander to preserve their images permanently in space.
The Blue Ghost mission was successfully completed on 2 March 2025, at 08:34 UTC when the lander touched down safely on the Moon’s surface. This achievement means the Liberland flag is now—although digitally—present on the Moon as part of humanity’s collective heritage.
As there was a huge chance of failure we decided to stay on the safe side and launch digital version first. The Moon is, as the saying goes, a harsh mistress. Unlike Earth, it has no atmosphere, no weather protection, and is constantly bombarded by ultraviolet radiation and micrometeorites.
The next natural step is to place a physical flag.
This is why Liberland is planning another, even more ambitious mission to secure a lasting physical presence beyond Earth. This mission will be organized in cooperation with Lifeship.com, an innovative space company that collects and preserves DNA and symbolic materials from around the world.
Lifeship’s mission is to create a “backup of humanity” by sending capsules containing DNA, small artefacts, and other data to the Moon and beyond, ” Their upcoming mission, scheduled for December this year, will deliver a payload to the lunar surface as part of a broader effort to safeguard human civilization and culture. Liberland will participate by including the Liberland flag and other representative materials.
This endeavour demonstrates Liberland’s commitment to pioneering technologies, and global cooperation. By reaching beyond our borders—and beyond our planet—we affirm the spirit of freedom, innovation, and human progress that Liberland stands for.
